Hotel Toiletry Sizes & Formats: A Buyer's Guide
UMYAN · Jun 6, 2026

The common hotel toiletry formats are bottles (15–40ml), tubes (30–40ml), pump/wall-mount (300–500ml), bulk refills (1L–5L) and bar soap (15–40g). Choosing between them comes down to three things: cost per room, the guest experience you want, and your sustainability policy.
That’s the short version. But the size you pick quietly drives your per-room cost and your housekeeping workload, so it’s worth getting right. We’ve sized toiletry programs for 5,000+ hotels since 2013, and below is how we’d talk you through the options. (If you want the full picture of what goes in a room, start with our complete hotel amenities list.)
Bottles (15–40ml)
The default single-use format, and still the most common in-room choice.
- 15–20ml suits economy and high-turnover rooms where cost per room rules.
- 30–40ml feels noticeably more generous and belongs in 4–5 star rooms. A near-empty 20ml bottle in a luxury room reads as stingy.
Branding is by label or silk-screen. For most properties the bottle is the single biggest branding surface in the bathroom, so don’t waste it on a generic clear bottle. See the bath & body range and the popular 30ml guest shampoo.
Buying tip: Match the bottle size to the bottle fill. We’ve seen buyers order a tall 40ml bottle filled to look premium, then discover the formula is thin and runs out fast. Specify both the size and a real, usable fill.
Tubes (30–40ml)
A lighter, lower-plastic alternative to bottles. Tubes use less material, travel well, and suit compact bathrooms and eco-leaning kits. They’re a good middle option when you want to cut plastic without moving all the way to dispensers.
Pump & wall-mount (300–500ml)
For showers and public washrooms, refillable pump dispensers cut single-use plastic and save housekeeping time. Instead of replacing a dozen small bottles per room, your team tops up one unit.
For example, a busy gym or pool washroom goes through small bottles constantly — a wall-mounted dispenser refilled from bulk removes that churn entirely.
Bulk refills (1L / 3.78L / 5L)
The back-of-house companion to dispensers. Bulk in your matched formula and fragrance is what makes a refillable program cost-effective — you buy liquid, not packaging. Keep your existing scent so guests never feel downgraded.
Bar soap (15–40g)
A classic, low-waste option that takes branding beautifully — embossed or wrapped. Bars are having a real comeback with ESG-led properties because they remove the bottle entirely. See pleated guest soap.
Which format should you choose?
Here’s the quick decision by tier.
| Room tier | Suggested format |
|---|---|
| Economy | 15–30ml bottle/tube, or a 2-in-1 to cut SKUs |
| 3–4 star | 30–40ml branded bottle |
| 5-star | premium 40ml + signature scent |
| Eco / ESG | refillable bulk + dispensers, bars, paper |
Most properties don’t pick a single format. The common, sensible setup is 30–40ml bottles in the rooms and 300–500ml dispensers in public washrooms — you keep the premium in-room feel and cut the bulk of your plastic where guests don’t mind.
Size mistakes that cost you money
After 13 years, these are the ones we see most:
- Over-sizing economy rooms. A 40ml bottle in a budget room that turns over daily is product (and money) literally going down the drain. Match size to length of stay and turnover.
- Under-sizing luxury rooms. The opposite problem. A 15ml bottle in a 5-star suite undercuts everything else you spent on the room.
- Too many SKUs. Every extra size and format adds ordering and storage complexity. Standardize across your portfolio where you can.
- Ignoring fill vs bottle. A big bottle barely filled fools no one and runs out fast. Specify the real fill volume.
Buying tip: If you run several properties at different tiers, keep one formula and scent across all of them and only vary the size. You get brand consistency and better pricing, without managing five different products.
How size drives your per-room cost
Size isn’t just a guest-experience decision — it’s the single biggest lever on what each room costs you in amenities. Two things move that number:
- Fill volume. A 40ml bottle simply contains more product than a 20ml one, so it costs more per unit. In a high-turnover room that gets a fresh set daily, that difference repeats 365 times a year.
- Usage vs waste. Guests rarely finish a bottle. The bigger the bottle in a short-stay room, the more product leaves with the housekeeping cart half-full. In long-stay or suite rooms, a larger size is justified because it actually gets used.
This is why the right answer is almost always match the size to the stay, not “buy the biggest bottle the budget allows.” A 2-in-1 shampoo-and-shower-gel in economy rooms is another lever — it halves the number of bottles without a guest noticing in a budget tier.
For example, a city hotel with daily turnover moved its economy floors from 40ml to 20ml and a 2-in-1, kept its 4-star floors at 30ml, and cut amenity spend on the budget rooms without a single complaint. Same brand, right-sized.
Branding on a small bottle
A 30–40ml bottle is one of the most-seen branding surfaces in your whole property — a guest holds it in the shower every morning. Don’t waste it. Your three options:
- Label — full color, the most flexible, good for detailed logos and ingredient text.
- Silk-screen — printed directly on the bottle, cleaner and more premium, no peeling label edge.
- Emboss (on tubes and soap) — tactile and subtle, reads as luxury.
The mistake to avoid is a generic clear bottle with a tiny sticker. At 5-star tier especially, the bottle finish should match the room. We can match labels, silk-screen and emboss across the bath & body range to keep one look across every size you order.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the most common hotel shampoo size?
30ml is the most common in-room size for 3–5 star hotels; 15–20ml is typical for economy and high-turnover rooms.
Are dispensers cheaper than bottles?
Over time, usually yes — you pay for liquid instead of packaging and save housekeeping time. The trade-off is up-front hardware cost. Many properties use bottles in rooms and dispensers in public areas to balance both.
Can we keep our scent if we switch to bulk or bars?
Yes. With 1,000+ in-house formulas, we match your existing formula and fragrance across bottles, bulk and bars, so a format change doesn’t mean a scent change.
